Today, I turn 22 years old.

I decided very early on in my writing career that I’d write this kind of listicle, as I got older every year and hopefully a little wiser.

I’ve experienced some crushing pain, huge obstacles, and made a lot of mistakes.

In just 22 years, I’ve done so much right, and so, so much wrong.

Here are 22 of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned.

  1. As a kid, I cursed my dad as he tried to teach me the importance of self-discipline. As an adult, I’ve realized that self-discipline is the key to all success.
  2. Never steal anything from anyone, ever. I used to shoplift and steal random things as a kid. Not because I really needed them, but for the thrill. I got caught once and got what was coming to me.
  3. Your family will be your family till the day you die. It’s easier and better for you mentally to make peace with their imperfections, rather than distance yourself from them or cut them off.
  4. ‘Treat others the way you want to be treated’. This is selfish at best and counterproductive advice at worst. Treat others how they want to be treated. I’m trying to get better at this.
  5. Things won’t make you happy. The dopamine you get from making big purchases and achieving external things will never last, it always fades…
